CBD: The Past, Present and Future

The first instance of recorded cannabis use was in 2737 BC within ancient China to aid a variety of ailments. Even before we knew exactly what it was, we knew it could be utilized a therapeutic resource. However, through the rise of modern medicine, it has fallen off due to a lack of research and therefore scientific evidence. More recently, we have begun to explore the possibilities and properties of this cannabinoid as a gold rush for cannabinoid knowledge has erupted.

The cannabis plant is composed with 483 known compounds, most notably, CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces the “high” effect while CBD is related to other portions of the body to overall well-being and relaxation. This distinction has been commonly overlooked by the public and therefore CBD has worn a negative stigma in the media. However, times have changed, and a concentrated effort has been placed in studying and utilizing CBD for its beneficial properties.

CBD can be extracted from cannabis plants in a variety of ways. Different techniques lead to the isolations of various compounds. In 1996, California passed Proposition 215 and became the first state to legalize medical marijuana allowing researchers to expand their studies of cannabinoid-related medical uses and thereby CBD.

CBD has always been a topic of discussion ever since it was first invented and extracted within clinical trials.o   This is a cannabis-based medicine with little to no psychoactive effects. Been used in history to treat health problems. More recently California, there has been a shift from high THC content in cannabis to a higher CBD content within strains. The gold rush for CBD rich strains began and dozens of labs popped up that defined this new playground.

Now CBD can be extracted from cannabis plants in a variety of ways. Different techniques lead to the isolations of various compounds. By soaking the plant in a solvent such as ethanol, all the cannabinoids will be stripped to allow for processing. This method creates full spectrum CBD oil which retains all naturally occurring cannabinoids, most importantly: CBD, CBD, CBC, CBN and THCBroad Spectrum CBD oil excludes THC.

After the compounds are extracted, they must be placed in a carrier oil such as olive oil or other plant-based fats to reduce risk of damage due to oxidation. Because CBD has a shelf life of one year, we pay up most attention to processing and packaging our CBD properly. Additionally, this allows the product to be ingested and circulated throughout the body more thoroughly.

Consumer demand for CBD is unlikely to let up anytime soon. After becoming legalized, there was an understandable surge in demand due to the novelty of the substance. Some experts suggested that this would be short-lived; once people got over the newness of the substance, they would move onto something else.

But the numbers suggest something different. The market for CBD in 2020 is $967.2 million, but it’s projected to grow to $5.3 billion by 2025.
